Pork prices reach record highs in Chicago area
Wholesale pork in Chicago on August 14 rose to 29.50 per hundred pounds, more than tripling in two years. Yesterday’s jump added 23 dollars over the 5.50 low from 1993. Causes cited include last year’s drought and hog feed shortages, with the Agricultural Adjustment Act program also noted. Secretary Wallace argued the pig purchase program kept consumer costs from rising further.
