Secret meeting held by Texas stock probe panel

A Texas House General Investigating Committee met in secret to discuss a federal stock fraud case tied to National Bankers Life Insurance Co. and alleged manipulation of its stock. The panel, chaired by Rep. Menton Mur Harlingen, plans further secret sessions and will coordinate with the attorney general on information related to state government and HB 72 HB 73. Members include Reps. DeWitt Hale Jit Nugent James Slider and Clyte Haynes.

Solon Says Loans Written Off Amid Bank Collapse

NOUSTON UPI The Sharpstown State Bank wrote off 600000 in loans to state officials the bank made before closing two months ago. Rep Archer says he does not know which officials benefited and prefers not to become a political demagogue. The hearing noted stock investments tied to the loans. Gov Smith and party chair paid back their 1250 profits. Police later report a separate case in Mexico City where a man attacked a religious image during prayer. In Claremont California the city distributed 180000 ladybugs to combat elm aphids after protests against DDT use.
