The Saline Jaycees sponsor a two evening voter registration drive Thursday and Friday September 24 and 25 starting at 6 p.m. Volunteers will door knock to register unregistered residents while City Clerk Julia Rapp notes procedures and deputizes helpers. About 2100 of Saline’s 4770 residents are registered.
Saline High School faces a dispute over long hair and a strict dress code. Donald Church Jr and Wade Thigpen seek a temporary restraining order as the School Board defends the policy, while a Friday U.S. District Court hearing weighs rights under multiple amendments.
Mrs. Geraldine Chantelois underwent surgery at Saline Community Hospital this week. Medical patients at the Saline hospital include Mrs. Martha Bankhecht Mrs. Ela Johnson Mrs. Robert Gordon Mrs. Earl Richards and Clifford Busha. Salinians under treatment at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital this week included James Carman Jr Mrs. M. Belle Emerson Larry Beckington Stanley Goodfellow Mrs. Florence Meyer and James Delhey who was discharged Saturday.
City Council debated where Detroit Edison should plant evergreens along the east and west sides of its W Bennett Street substation. Edison seeks a front fence move for a new transmitter, with some lines going underground. Neighbors praised the grounds but feared more overhead wires. Also approved steps to sign contracts for a new Wastewater Treatment Plant and sanitary sewers contingent on bond sales and grants.
A Saline area event at Leutheuser's Tuesday introduced new payroll withholding techniques for the Saline Area United Fund. Attendees included representatives from Saline Area Scop, Uniloy, Bridgewater Taber, and a gift from the Saline Office of First Savings Association of Ypsilanti.
