Saline United Way Kickoff Dinner For Fund Drive

Saline Area United Way announces a 1977 78 drive with a $71 190 target. A kickoff dinner for volunteers and captains is set at Saline High School at 7 p m Tuesday October 4 emceed by Fern St Germain.

Moon Bemis intersection improvements aided by residents

Thanks to cooperation from Howard Delf and Pon Feldkamp families, five locals will trim brush along Bemis Moon road shoulder to improve sight lines at the four way intersection. The Washtenaw County Road Commission previously switched Bemis and Moon traffic stops and now deems the design proper. A final cut may shave a few more inches off the Moon rise before paving begins.

Lodi Township Funds Dial-A-Ride After Council Debates

Lodi Township approved a $1,000 contribution to Dial-A-Ride to support elderly and handicapped travelers in Lodi. In Saline, officials debated possibly withdrawing a $5,000 pledge, amid continuing controversy over route cuts and funding.

Four Fatals Hit Saline In 1976 To 1977 Tragedies

Brenda Harkness 16 dies after a Thursday crash on Michigan Ave bringing Saline’s 1977 traffic fatalities to four. Earlier fatalities include Debbie Witten 17 who died after a July 18 collision at McDonald’s. Steven Hill 23 of Ann Arbor and William Ackerman 74 of Ypsilanti died in separate Saline crashes this week. Brenda, a Saline High junior and cheerleader, was a passenger in a Pinto driven by Karla Partain 16. The Pinto skidded on wet pavement and was struck by a milk tanker after rear ending the Munson car.

Defense Lawyer’s Accident Delays Sweet Case in Chelsea

The preliminary examination into the fatal July 18 crash that killed 17 year old Debbie Witten in Saline was postponed because defense attorney Leonard Young was injured in a separate car crash. The hearing was rescheduled for Monday September 26 in Chelsea.

Thieves and Vandals Target Saline Area Over Weekend

Burglars stole about 400 dollars from Saline Lanes on W Michigan Ave last Friday and damaged machines inside. Other thefts affected residents Mark Kish and Alvin Heskett with a 300 dollar minibike 206 S Ann Arbor St reported missing. A CB radio 60 to 80 dollars and a motor 95 dollars plus tackle box 75 dollars were taken from vehicles. BB gun damage caused 100 dollars of harm to two Middle School windows. Ford plant lot crimes scratched two vehicles, and paint was damaged on two 1977 models.
