1964 Saline Fair moved up to avoid school conflict

The 1964 Saline Community Fair will be held a week earlier than in prior years after a board vote led by president Ray Girbach. The fair runs September 9 to 12 just after Labor Day and aligns with the school calendar as schools start September 9. The board will meet and elect officers on the second Monday of December.

Hazardous Fire Conditions Warned By City Fire Chief

Fire Chief Harold Armbruster issued a drought driven alert for extremely hazardous conditions. Homeowners must take care with trash burning and hunters opening day must avoid discarded cigarettes or matches. No burning permits will be issued until substantial rainfall. Despite no local rise yet, grass and swamp fires have troubled Washtenaw County areas. A Washtenaw school board meeting is scheduled for 8 pm October 23 at the high school conference room.

Two Injured In Accidents On Saline Ann Arbor Road

Two local men were injured in separate automobile accidents on Saline Ann Arbor Road within an hour early Friday. James Earl Keller 22 of 61 Nichols Drive escaped with arm scrapes after his northbound car left the road at 80 mph, crashed into a ditch, toppled a utility pole and skidded 210 feet. He was treated at Saline Community Hospital. Near Weber Road the same night Dennis Gransden 17 of 1712 S State left the road and struck a utility pole, was thrown through the windshield, and treated at St Joseph Mercy Hospital for facial and body cuts. Police cited a defective steering mechanism as the cause for Gransden’s crash.

Local Girl Wins State 4-H Award

Nichole Shotka daughter of Louis and Mrs Shotka of Campbell Rd Saline Michigan was named state winner of the annual Michigan Quarter Horse 4-H award. A seventh year 4-H member she has earned multiple honors in the horse project and broader 4-H work. She leads Brand-X 4-H and has competed in clothing foods feathercraft and junior leadership. The Michigan State University campus banquet Saturday night presented the award based on overall achievement in 4-H horse projects, with district and county winners advancing to the state level.

Saline Board Plans Citizens Advisory Committee

The Saline area Board of Education discussed forming a Citizens School Advisory Committee of about thirty members from across the district to advise on school matters and connect the school with the community. The board also approved paying bills totaling $17 065.53 and outlined rules on pregnant students delaying enrollment until eight weeks after childbirth.

Child Poisoning From Sparklers Sparks Hospital Visit

The 16 month old son of a local police officer was rushed to St Joseph Mercy hospital after drinking a sparkler solution made by his sisters for a pretend tea party. Doctors performed stomach lavage and treated him for poisoning from phosphorus nitrates and possible arsenate of lead and he was listed in good condition.

Voters Urged to Renew Registrations Under New Rule

City voters were told that a vote every four years is not enough after Public Act 85. Registration now ends every two years unless a person votes. Those whose last vote was in 1961 or earlier must vote on November 5 or re register in December to be eligible in 1964 elections.

City Voter Registration Drops in Saline Area

City records show registered voters fell from 1341 in March to 1303 currently. Only 12 new residents registered to vote, while 50 have died or moved away, with some relocating outside city limits but still within Saline area.

Cyclist Injured In Saline Gravel Crash

James G. Hayden, 20, of Saline, treated at Saline Community Hospital after his motorcycle went out of control on loose gravel on S. Maple Rd. and flipped. He sustained back, shoulder and leg injuries.
