Elmer L. Houghton 48 principal of Saline High School dies Monday afternoon at Rabbit Bay on Lake Superior. Services Thursday at Lutheran Church Houghton Lake with burial there. Survived by wife Armeda daughter Barbara son Douglas sister Vivian Houghton brother Clair Houghton. He earlier led Carney High School and taught in Houghton Lake schools.

Road Along NYC Tracks Proposed by Saline Officials

Saline area Planning Commission and Pittsfield township officials discussed creating an industrial corridor along the northeast Saline railroad line to the Hoover plant. A study of topography and drainage will determine suitability for industry, with a possible railroad access road and track relocation considered by officials and New York Central. The Development Corp. holds an option on 78 acres but zoning remains nonindustrial and spot-zoning concerns were raised.

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Saline on Wednesday August 21 to replenish supplies for the Saline Blood Bank. It will be open 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Intermediate School.

Clyde Niedfeldt, an industrial arts teacher at Saline High School, offered his resignation to the Board of Education to accept a similar position at Bedford High School. The board will vote on the resignation at the next meeting.

Long life of Mrs. Fredericka McBride recalled

Fredericka Josenhans McBride died at 102 after a long active life. Born July 14 1861 in Scio township she was the youngest of 13 children. She lived in Dundee until 1927 then moved to Saline with sisters. She was a longtime member of First Baptist and Federated Church groups and the Washtenaw County Historical Society.

Motorcyclist Dies After Crash Here

Alfred Lavern Brockman 20 died after a rain slicked crash on N Ann Arbor street near Bennett in Washtenaw County. Heik kila and wife Lillian were slightly injured. Brockman was en route from Ypsilanti to Ann Arbor with a companion and stopped at the Stull home for shelter.

Teen Club plans Toys for Tots dance at school

The local Teen Club sponsors a Toys for Tots dance Friday from 8 30 to 11 pm at the Intermediate School. Admission is a toy, new or used, or 25 cents. Proceeds go to an orphanage or benefit group. A game period from 7 30 to 8 30 pm precedes the event.

City summer recreation program ends Friday with certificates for swimmers and the girls softball trophy presentation. Refreshments will be served at the Intermediate School for registered children.

Father and Five Children Hurt In Accident

A local man Arnold Lancaster and his five children were injured when their car was hit at an unmarked Toledo area intersection and flipped into a ditch. Seat belts saved Arnold and his 19 month old son Arnold Jr. from serious harm. the family was en route to visit Mrs Lancaster’s parents.
