Area Totes Water After Deep Freeze

Saline area endured near disaster as five days without drinkable water in homes barns and businesses. Pipes froze and thawed slowly. City crews and welders handled bursts and frozen mains while residents struggled to water stock and launder. Weathermen forecast more record cold ahead.

Driver Frostbitten After Snow Drifts Cause 4 a.m. Wreck

Donald J. Trumble of 118 Tower Dr. was treated at Saline Community Hospital after his car skidded into a ditch on Wagner Road at 4 a.m. The driver suffered a neck injury and a frostbitten ear and walked 45 minutes in 20 below zero cold to get help.

Dress Children Warmly Urged as Subzero Temps Hit

School officials express concern over inadequately dressed students amid subzero temperatures. Principal Dwight Reynolds cites light coats and bare legs, warns buses and heaters may fail in extreme cold. New Equipment For Hospital Purchased in 62

Saline Community hospital lists recent additions including a sewing machine for linens, two cold steam vaporizers for bronchial cases, a Gordon-Armstrong Isolette incubator funded by the auxiliary, an automatic tournequet, a Duke inhaler, and various surgical instruments. Anticipated purchases include an oxygen high-humidity tent and an Electrodyne External Defibrillator to aid cardiac care.

Kids Game Precedes Harlem Magicians Exhibition

An 8th grade and 8th grade preliminary game is set to precede the Harlem Magicians exhibition against Saline faculty. The warm-up features two all star 7th and 8th grade boy teams coached by Ed Dubais at 6 30 p.m. on Wednesday February 6 at the High School. Tickets are 150 for adults and 1 for students, available from Jaycees or at the gate.

Washtenaw Conference to Split Up and Reorganize

The Washtenaw interscholastic athletic conference will disband before September 1964 as member schools realign into new leagues. Cause is size divergence among schools. a new conference will include U-High Clinton Manchester Roosevelt Whitmore Lake Brooklyn Grass Lake, leaving Chelsea Saline Dexter Pinckney in Washtenaw. Schools will meet in February to discuss plans and aim for year-end resolutions.

Saline Blood Bank Donations Boost Local Heart Patients

Three Saline boys and many others stay healthy thanks to the Saline area Blood Bank which provides free blood. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Saline Thursday to replenish stocks at the Intermediate School from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. All medical staff volunteering are local, except the Bloodmobile crew.

Fire burns man in house. he is reported doing well

Edward Laudon, 42, of 58 Cavanaugh Lake Rd. Sylvan Township, suffered second degree burns over 15 percent of his body when a fireplace fire flared up and set his clothes ablaze. He and his wife escaped as the house burned. firefighters from Chelsea Dexter and Manchester took 28 men to control the blaze. Laudon was taken to St Joseph Mercy Hospital and is expected to stay a week or more.

Kiwanis District Speaker Checks In On 1963 Theme

Kiwanis district six Lt. Gov Jack Thompson spoke at the local club meeting at Martys Restaurant. He outlined the 1963 theme Responsibility the Key to Freedom and announced Kiwanis chartering clubs in London Paris Zurich and Copenhagen. Saline High School this week published the third marking period and semester honor roll. Each name shows a six week period designation and the semester standing. The list that follows names students achieving high academic marks.

Rites Wednesday For Paul Engel 21

Funeral services were held for Paul Theodore Engel 21 son of Rev H L Engel who died after his car struck a dimly lit pickup on US 12 west of Saline. The other driver Herbert A Asberry 54 of Horton Mich and his wife were treated for minor injuries. Engel born February 15 1941 in Saline attended Redeemer Lutheran Ann Arbor Saline and Michigan Lutheran Seminary Saginaw was active in youth work and led a local automobile safety club. Interment was at Oakwood cemetery with multiple survivors including his parents a sister and maternal grandparents. He recently worked for Wiedemeier Electronic Supply Co in Ann Arbor.
