Michigan pheasant numbers remain strong with a 1961 post season benchmark surpassed. A survey of about 600 rural mail carriers in late November and early December recorded an average 2.8 birds per 100 miles in the primary ringneck range, with gains in southern areas. Carriers totaled roughly 400000 miles, with counts boosted by snow aiding visibility.
Representatives from this area participated in the People to People program. Refreshments followed the event, noted by the reporter.
The council paused a plan for a subdivision on the old Barr estate pending a work session. Street Commissioner George Anderson opposed 27 foot cul de sac widths citing narrower roads than current 35 foot standard and potential parking loss. Drainage issues also cited. planning commission had approved the plan.
Farmers in the area will gather Saturday for John Deere Day sponsored by Gross Farm Equipment at Saline Intermediate School starting at 10 30 a.m. Host Allie Gross calls it one of the most interesting events offered, aimed at farmers their wives and children to honor the farm families and their contribution to American life.
The Saline Library Association reports balances and insurance for 1963. A film program for farmers features farm equipment demos with Hollywood personalities led by Cliff Arquette. Admission is free with lunch. Tri Township Farm Bureau meets Jan 1963. Michigan soil conservation districts mark 25 years at MSU January 18 19 with about 200 directors attending.
A 27 minute 16 mm documentary titled Michigan Can Lead the Way portrays Michigan's constitutional convention activities. Produced with MSU, U of M, and Wayne State cooperation, the film is available free through university film loan libraries. Reservations go to university AV departments or the Constitutional Office in Lansing.
A Liquor Control Commission hearing is scheduled at 10 am on Thursday January 17 regarding a complaint against the American Legion Memorial Home association for selling to non members and minor consumption. The Legion holds a club license.
Two new directors were elected at the Washtenaw Soil Conservation District annual meeting in the County Building last week. Orin Girbach of Saline and Maynard Leach of Manchester were chosen to fill the expired terms of Luther Schaible and Raymond Girbach. After the meeting Neil Nixon and Albert Gall gave an illustrated talk on Russian agriculture based on summer travels in Russia and Germany as farmer representatives.
