A citizen group prompted the Saline School Board to form a committee to study equal opportunities for girls in school sports. The panel will report to the January board meeting and consider equalizing budgets, more coaching, and intramural and varsity girls programs.
Three security firms asked for extra time to complete bids for a Saline Area Schools intruder detection and automatic alert system. They cited recent school closings that hindered site inspections. The Board postponed bid openings to the January meeting.
Michigan would end distinct rich and poor districts under Senator Gilbert E. Bursley’s state aid plan. He urged equal returns on equal effort, proposing a 20 mill minimum local effort or equivalent via local income tax, with districts free to set spending after minimums.
The County Humane Society at 3100 Cherry Hill Rd will open Sunday December 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for free pet adoptions for Christmas shopping. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 662-5585 for details.

Grace McCalla High School students collect 60 to 70 Santa letters from Saline children. The notes blend humor and innocence as kids request minibikes, GI Joes, dolls, toy trains, and snow models, some with illegible handwriting or missing names.
In Saline area churches and homes preparations for Christmas are in full swing. First Baptist Church features a locally sourced tree prepared by George Renton and decorated by Jean Campbell, with messages of good will and funds redirected to church work. The children's choir under Jane Baldwin provides special music as Christmas nears, offering spiritual calm amid the season’s rush.
The Saline Area Schools Board of Education will ask City Council to approve an agreement letting Saline Police enforce city traffic laws on school property during regular patrols. Officers could ticket speeders and violators on campus without a school request, with no extra police coverage and possible school district funding for extra time at trouble spots.
