Dennis E. Sweet of Ann Arbor faced negligent homicide charges in 14th District Court for the July 18 accident that killed Debbie Witten of Saline. Judge Henry Arkison ordered a preliminary examination for Tuesday September 6. Sweet remains free on a 2500 dollar personal recognizance bond.
Firefighters were unable to save the abandoned barn at 1319 Textile Rd last Monday evening. The blaze drew spectators as flames and heat damaged nearby trees while a Paul family ruin stood nearby. Family negotiates with Pittsfield and Saline Area fire departments to burn remaining outbuildings as a training exercise.
Saline police investigate the theft of a 1100 dollar motorcycle from Jon Dom's parking lot and a 60 dollar Schwinn 10 speed from a garage. Three Westland youths, ages 13 and 14, were later picked up, suspected of stealing a 4967 Barracuda and facing Juvenile Court referral.
Electronic sensors on the fence around the Huron Valley Women's Facility failed during tests, allowing two inmates to escape Friday night and a third Saturday. All escapes traced to a faulty sensor segment. two were recaptured, one at large in Kalkaska County awaiting pickup. A hospital miscommunication delayed resident alerts, but officials promise fixes.
Travis Pointe Country Club hires Steve Schneider and Tom Drake as groundskeepers to fill in while they wait for Navy induction delayed by Steve testifying in a crash trial. Both will depart September 21 after a three week fill-in period. Norm Van Sickle transfers to Tulsa, Jaycee duties pass to Jim Wiedmayer.
The Saline Fair kicks off next Tuesday in the fairgrounds arena at 8 30 p m with the Miss Saline pageant featuring eight official contestants and a broader guest list of participants. The week continues with a talent show Wednesday and livestock auction Thursday, culminating in a parade and various competitions Saturday as the community joins in.
