Milk price hike to raise bottled milk costs in Michigan
The wholesale price for bottling milk in Michigan will rise 60 cents per hundred pounds effective September 3, under the Cost of Living Council Phase 4. The increase equals about 1 and one third cents per quart at retail. It applies only to packaged fluid milk, not to cottage cheese, butter, or other dairy products. May milk production was down 3 percent from a year earlier and September is forecast 5 percent lower than September 1972. The drop is accelerating, with dairy cattle shifted to beef markets, says MMPA President Glenn Lake.
