Clean-up campaign slows corn borer spread in Midwest

A ten million dollar spring campaign against the European corn borer reduced the pest's growth in infested areas according to a USDA survey of 743 townships. The report to the International Corn Borer Organization notes a 50 percent increase this year but 60 percent less corn acreage and a 50 percent dip in infestation in Ontario. The council urged continued farm practices and further research as Ontario shows significant improvements.
