Planting Trees for a Self Supporting Timber Future
A yearlong look at the Huron National Forest shows the benefits of sustained forest management. Planting dense seedlings with eventual thinning creates perpetual wood supply. Coops like AuSable Forest Products Association provide steady income for farmers and return payrolls, while a portion of stumpage funds support local and county governments. Foresters warn about fire risk in dry cycles and rising public indifference to timber depletion. Planting and long term planning emerge as a sound national investment.
