Record Yield of Hardigan Alfalfa Seed Despite Drought in Michigan
Homer Swartout of Michigan harvested 210 bushels of Hardigan alfalfa seed from a 2.20 acre field seeded in 1928, an official drought year. The crop would have fetched about $500 hay value, but was left to feed due to county agent advice. Michigan Crop Improvement reports seven to nine bushels per acre yields elsewhere, with improved seed quality and Hardigan’s winter hardiness. A separate dispatch notes 30 rattlesnakes at William Brown’s Bellevue farm driving away, scaring threshers and turkeys, with two mother snakes among those killed.
