Townsends Longtime Leader Gilmer C Townsend Dies

Gilmer C Townsend born August 6 1857 in New York state died Saturday after a lifelong career in commerce banking and public service He served as Saline Michigan mayor and on the county board of supervisors and belonged to the Methodist church Masonic lodge Rotary Club and was life member of several Townsend relatives survive including widow Mabel C and several nieces Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery Funeral services were held Tuesday at Lockwood funeral home led by Dr Fred A Lendrum

Mrs Maude Rankin Dies After Illness At 64

Mrs. Maude Rankin aged 64 died Friday after a long illness though her health had been poor for years. Born February 22, 1875 in Kankakee Illinois she married Winton Lyle Rankin October 30 1902. She lived in the community 20 years and belonged to Federated church. Funeral 2 PM Monday at Lockwood funeral home Rev William H Bach officiated. burial beside her husband in Oakwood cemetery. There are no surviving relatives.

Death of John G Finkbeiner 87 at Saline Township

John George Finkbeiner died Saturday morning at his daughter’s home in Saline township at age 87. Born in Germany October 25, 1855, he was a member of St. James Church. Services were held at the Rhoem home and at St. James Church with burial in St. James Cemetery. Survivors include three sons and seven daughters, 17 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Library Receives State Grant for New Books

Saline Public Library receives 64.54 from State Aid to Public Libraries, aimed at equalization for libraries in low assessed valuation areas. Funds buy new books and magazines. The library, open Wednesdays and Saturdays, promotes Victory Book Campaign and asks for book donations at banks or Gross hardware.

Mayor Alwin Gross accepted the Honor Bell on behalf of the city as the High School Band gave performances led by Chester Ryan. Royal S. Baker funded a Red Cross donation through a painting project, and speakers included Reverend Baumann, with support from F. W. Harms and Royal Baker.

Fire Causes Attic Damage at Giddings Place

Fire Chief Heinie Ormsby reports a Thursday afternoon blaze at Ed and Mrs Hering’s home on Russel Street started by a blow torch used to burn old paint from the cornice. Damage confined to the attic between two rafters with smoke harming several firemen and bystanders. The Giddings Place was recently purchased by the Herings and is undergoing repairs and redecorating.

Saline Woman's Club Reciprocity Day Planned

The Saline Woman's Clip reports Reciprocity Day at the Methodist church on Tuesday October 19 with The Willing Workers and Macon Woman's Club as guests. A potluck luncheon will start at noon with each attendee bringing their own table service. A Red Cross speaker will present and each group will cover a portion of the program. Major league baseball in New York City draws about 3 000 000 attendees annually, representing 31 percent of the national total.
