Pine Weevil Avoids Protected Conifers
Hardwood trees interplanted with a white pine help protect the conifer from the white pine weevil, regarded as the tree’s main enemy by Michigan State College. Adults fly at treetop level to lay eggs on high tips, injuring twigs and causing malformed growth. Sprays timed to egg deposition offer partial protection, while pruning infested twigs and cage-rearing devices can reduce beetle numbers. Pines three to fifteen feet tall are most affected, with damage declining as trees reach about 20 feet.
