Winter Solutions For Soft Shelled Eggs
Winter egg problems can be reduced by a balanced ration with a good laying mash in constant hopper access, supplemented by grain at night and morning, plus crushed oyster shell or limestone grit. Expose hens to direct sun via UV transmitting glass and supplement vitamin D with cod liver oil at one pint per 100 pounds of mash.
Leg Weakness in Young Chickens Causes and Symptoms
Weak legs common in poultry arise from rheumatism and other factors. Overcrowded or overheated quarters, improper heat in brooders, constant wooden floors, and intestinal trouble from swarms can all cause weakness. Pullets often recover after laying their first half dozen eggs.
Feed Male Birds Separately to Boost Health and Breeding
An expert poultry producer says feeding the male bird separately from the flock prevents him from hogging feed. A warm wet mash with a tablespoon of cod liver oil improves health, fertility, and chick growth.
Keeping Records Helps Poultry Farmers Track Fluctuations
Records are an important part of the poultry business and every poultry man should keep at least an egg record each day. This reveals daily variation and may signal when feed or management changes are needed. Also keep a bird count including sold eaten or died and take records at year start.
Feed and Labor Costs in Poultry Production
A Kansas state board of agriculture study finds labor totals per bird vary by flock size from 29 hours annually in flocks under 100 hens to 1.6 hours per bird in flocks over 150. Feed costs average 43.4 percent and labor 28.7 percent of total production cost, stressing careful study of both factors.
