A friendly column offers inspiration and amusement from neighbors, then provides a chocolate cake recipe. It lists two mixtures with chocolate, coffee, sugar and shortening, eggs, milk, flour, and soda, plus icing containing more chocolate and coffee and a walnut sized butter amount. The note credits Mrs. A. E. O'Neill and cites The Observer dated September 15th.
The St James Evangelical church at Benton hosts its annual Mission Fest with two services October 4. At 10 a.m. Rev Ernst Brenson of Taylor Center preaches the German sermon, and at 7:30 p.m. Rev HE Lawrenz of Detroit delivers the English service. Ernest Ham, Farmington violinist, provides special music. The Brenson family and Mrs Lawrenz are Washtenaw natives. A Babylonian glass artifact dated 2500 B C is noted.
Bridgewater merchants George and Oscar Bersuder promote Bersuders as Washtenaw County’s finest general store. They stock farm supplies overalls shirts socks shoes hardware groceries dry goods yard goods and meats with friendly service and fair prices. Their meat curing and seasonings are highlighted as top quality.
The 1881 account notes the destruction by fire causing a loss of 5000 dollars at J Hoyt and Son grist mill and stave factory. Additional items report Miss Jessie Lawrente departing for Oberlin College, Rev J W Hickmott and wife visiting from Angola Indiana, and his upcoming trip to England.
A collection of succinct moral maxims from Lee Macdonald Eddy Morris and Ruskin. It links duty to action with references to scripture and ethics. The lines emphasize doing one’s duty in all things and the equality of duty across individuals.
The county board of supervisors will open Monday October 12, continuing for two weeks. Reports from county officers will be received and a budget adopted for the coming year. Welfare financing is likely to be discussed at these meetings.
Sigmund Klager lost a valuable horse that died during silo filling. Farmers begin clover hulling and cornstalk shredding after silo work ends. Klager Hatchery gets white and green paint. Farmers Produce hauls another car of wheat to a Michigan mill. Clarke Gordon takes Boy Scouts to Lansing for the Michigan State football opener. Local lumber firm supplies for a cottage at Pleasant Lake and additions at Polar Bear recreation center. Schnurstein drills five gravel wells at 75 to 125 feet. Luther Klager, Smith Incubator rep, visits Man chester. Erwin Klager at Newton. A large cattle auction at Rentschler sale barn sells 55 Jersey cows to area farmers. Cardwell had sold 56 similar head in Brooklyn prior day.
Monday forenoon, September 21, Dr A S Hall received a pleasant call from Mrs S B Mereness and her daughter Miss Hugenia of Ypsilanti. They also visited their cousin Miss Nettie Simmons. Mrs Mereness was formerly Miss Julia A Talcott who taught one of the grades the 1869 70 and 1870 71 years and gave Hall German lessons to aid his university prep. She called to congratulate him on reaching 81. She is 88 and active with good sight and hearing. Several Saline residents who were her pupils still remember her.
Charles A. Jewell of Pittsford will teach agriculture replacing Frederick Gettel who resigns to join Consumers Power Company in rural electrification. Jewell, a Hast Lansing State College graduate, has teaching experience in Michigan and Washington. State Supervisor Gallup praises him as an outstanding college member and a strong teacher for Saline.
After years, 5Sa High plans a student government council with two representatives from each class to meet the superintendent or principal. Seniors Luther Dicks Grace Clark Juniors Betty King Lloyd Armbruster Sophomores Stanley Gall Jean Fosdick Freshmen Jeannette Clay William Tower Eighth Melvin Schaefer Geraldine Hayball Seventh Doris Jean Davis Norman Hildebrandt One Senior will be chairman and a Junior secretary to foster school unity and responsibility.
In a Tecumseh home game Saline lost 24 to 0 as injuries disrupted Saline early, including a broken collar bone to Lloyd Armbruster. Tecumseh struck with two first half touchdowns and added another in the third period while Saline struggled to gain ground.
City Clerk announces blank nominating petitions for five or more council seats and one constable to appear on the November 2 ballot. Each petition requires 30 or more registered voters signatures and must be filed 20 days before the election. LOTTIE WALLACE, City Clerk.
