Strawberry crimps disease traced to tiny nematode in Florida

Dr. A. N. Brooks of the Florida Experiment Station identifies a small eelworm Aphelenchus fragariae as the cause of crimps or red plant disease in strawberries. The nematode, smaller than root-knot, spreads via soil and rain water, cripples young leaves, and can destroy up to 75 percent of a plant while yearly losses reach two percent of Florida's crop. Control relies on field inspections, removing diseased plants, preventing transfer from buds, and crop rotation rather than spraying.
