House votes both ways on key policy amid leadership strain

In a display of party discipline, the House alternated on two amendments during Committee of the Whole sessions. Peanuts were kept as a basic commodity for price support by a 215 to 193 vote, then a Vinson amendment to curb Defense Department activities failed 202 to 184 on roll call. The scene illustrates narrow control in the 84th Congress. A separate note reports A. John K. Weinhardt leaving for Quonset Point after two weeks with parents, to report aboard the carrier Tarawa following boat training at Great Lakes.
