Congress Cuts Big Atomic Energy and Interior Budget Requests
In a session on Interior Department and Independent Offices appropriations the House trimmed the Interior request from 559.3 million to 496.8 million and reduced the Independent Offices from 6.84 billion to 6.14 billion. An $85,000 pet hospital at Los Alamos drew bipartisan flak and an amendment by Rep. Lyle to cut the Atomic Energy Commission funds passed overwhelmingly. The article notes secrecy at the AEC complicating oversight and details a procedural move suspending a point of order to allow savings of about 750 million, with additional cuts approved. The author closes with a personal note from Bob Klueter reflecting on Army basic training.
