Windbreak Rye Strips Help Stop Sand Blowing On Michigan Farm
A.M. Grootendorst of Berrien County uses contour planted rye strips as miniature windbreaks to protect soil and seedlings on sandy land. Michigan State College and Soil Conservation Service officials say the method conserves water and aids early summer seedings. The farmer normally seeding rye around September 1 left two‑foot strips every 66 feet, reducing erosion and avoiding replanting. The Tuberculosis Association recommends tuberculin testing and chest X‑rays for screening.
