Barley Grown More On Michigan Farms
Barley acreage across Michigan is rising with strong markets and high feed value. Michigan State College reports yields of 40 to 45 bushels per acre, with some crops over 60. Barley feeds dairy cattle, substitutes for corn in frosted areas, and matures early for hog finishing. Farmers mix 12 to 15 pounds of sweet clover with barley and plow it down next year. Records advise sowing barley as early as workable. A separate notice records a three-automobile collision near the west bridge, leaving one woman injured and all drivers strangers.
