Michigan State College plant breeders announced Michelite a new navy bean variety in 1938 and it now adds about 1 million dollars yearly. With high uniformity and mosaic and blight resistance this bean replaced half the state plantings and boosted value across 741 000 cultivated acres in 1941.
Many Saline people wear glasses fitted by Dr. Frank Gifford an optometrist in Toledo. In Milan the event runs Saturday from 2:30 to 9:30 p m at the Milan Hotel office location.
Julia Carven of Saline Michigan celebrates her 90th birthday on a Thursday with calls from relatives and friends. Born March 12 1852 in Steuben County New York she lived in Virginia during Civil War years and spent decades in Saline with husband Charles Carven until his death in 1934. She remained active in Red Cross and library circles and now enjoys reading and handiwork with her daughter Bessie Collins and grandsons Charles and Max.
Saline General Hospital reports Dale Sieloff of Willis had his tonsils removed last Thursday. Max McHenry is recovering from pneumonia. Harold Armbruster and family welcome a son born March 2. Clarence Reed and family announce a daughter born March 6. Eldon Hard and family announce a son born March 8. Mary Haeussler of Pleasant Lake road underwent emergency appendectomy last Wednesday. she is doing nicely. C P Shannon of Chicago treated for a cut on the chin but resumed travel. Wilhelm Dagostino of Highland Park had a blizzard accident driving in a rut. the car skidded and turned over. He escaped injury but was shocked and bruised, later released from the hospital.
J M Bridges a Michigan Department of Revenue consultant will visit Saline Savings Bank on March 18 to assist the public with filing Intangible Tax returns. The service is free of charge.
Card of thanks expresses gratitude for cards flowers calls and assistance at the accident and to Mr and Mrs Dan Hall for kindnesses. A note adds that ninety percent of U S leather is used by the shoe trade.

Farmers from across the county and four neighboring counties gathered at Wiedman Auto Company for farm day. Speakers discussed the United States Department of Agriculture program, emphasizing mechanized equipment and efficient use of current machinery for victory. A technicolor film on farming and aviation education followed meals and talks.
Governor Murray D. Van Wagoner endorses the ninth annual Easter Seals sale by the Michigan Society for Crippled Children Inc. The drive runs March 10 to April 6 to aid crippled children and support disabled persons. The governor urges full citizen support, highlighting wartime needs and the program’s social dividends.
Saline lost to Ypsilanti Roosevelt 43 to 31 in the district tournament at Ypsilanti Central gym. Dale Hirth and Don Kelsey each scored nine for Saline while Roosevelt’s Delmer Seleska had 13.

Edith Thomas of the University library spoke on demand for good books and reviewed several titles including Native American and The Doctors Mayo.
