Michigan plan to reforest Upper Peninsula gains scale

The Michigan Mirror reports a vast reforestation effort in the Upper Peninsula with 110000 acres of damaged land replanted and 30000 acres added each year. Forester Watts advocates public forest ownership to address unemployment and balance conservation with tourism. The piece notes extensive lumbering, economic contrasts, and a cynical view of selective logging amid regional industry pressures.

It highlights the Straits bridge as a traffic gateway, the shift from welfare-era decline to recreation as economic hope, and colorful local spots like Gateway Inn and Barefoot Charlie amid vast, forested North Country scenery.
