Plant shallow to beat bean maggots
Michigan State College entomologist Ray Hutson advises very shallow sowing of beans not more than half an inch deep to reduce maggot damage. Plow under manure prior to sowing if used. Fall plowing helps on land new to clover or alfalfa. Tar paper disks around cabbage plants and corrosive sublimate watering offer protection. Bulletin No. 179 may be requested free from Michigan State College.

The Spy Plot That Failed During World War I
In early World War I Pittsburgh a rough Belgian disguise frequented a Carnegie library branch. Frances Langfitt spotted him while covertly tracking maps and coastlines. Detected by Operative Henry and United States agents, the two Germans linked to spying were arrested, then vanished into a detention camp as the war secrets remained unresolved. Brighton, nearby, faced rain and hail with minor damage to a car top.
