Michigan Budget Deficit Delays Tax Reform and Redistricting
The Legislature adjourned after a frenzied session approving about 300 million dollars in expenditures amid 200 amendments. A 70 million dollar deficit projection, with revenues lagging behind, highlights the failure to pass a 2 percent corporation profits tax. The mishandling spurred attack on lobbyist John Lovett while a new 18th district was created by redrawing the old 17th. Gas prices rose with a half-cent tax hike, and a Little Hoover Commission move led to a Director of Elections to improve voter administration.
