State Bar of Michigan Self Governing and Active in Discipline
Grievance committees hear lawyer complaints with subpoena power and can urge discipline. Since creation, fifty attorneys have been disbarred or resigned under committee action. Committees operate voluntarily, with no pay, funded by the State Bar. The 21-member commission leads extensive volunteer work, aided by hundreds of lawyers across committees, all without compensation. The bar supports courts and state bodies and shows strong self-governance in raising professional standards.
