Scab threat hits county wheat as yields drop
County reports serious wheat scab, especially near Saline, with growers fearing up to 50 percent harvest losses. Field samples show yields plunging from an expected 40 bushels per acre to under 15. The disease, Gibberella saubinetti, appears in early head blight stages during moist weather, with potential seedling blight if affected seedlings are planted this fall.
