Great Lakes Topic Of U M Summer Session Conference
At the University of Michigan a summer session conference on the Great Lakes covered their history present and future with emphasis on the St Lawrence Seaway. General A G L McNaughtonPredicted Seaway completion by late 1958 or early 1959 and noted far reaching consequences for life and culture. University President Hatcher cited 40 million tons freight first year and power dams producing 15 billion kilowatts annually. Seaway would bring 75 percent of the worlds shipping to Michigan ports and cut freight costs from 13 to 1 70 per ton. The Lakes region is described as the most important in the U S with Michigan at its heart.
