The Comstock Lode Sparked a Westward Gold Rush
The article recounts the Comstock Lode discovery and Virginia City boom, detailing prospectors O’Riley and McLaughlin, Comstock’s dubious land claim, and the rush that followed. It notes the 1873 Consolidated Virginia treasure vaults and the ensuing boom, stock speculation, and eventual decline as profits waned and ghost towns lingered into the New Deal era.
