Upstate voters eyed as four counties could dominate legislature

A plan proposed by Michigan AFL and CIO leaders would reapportion the state legislature along the 1950 census lines. Petitions will be circulated to place the issue on next November’s ballot. The Detroit Flint metropolitan area holds over half of Michigan’s population, enabling four counties to control legislative affairs if 100 percent reapportionment passes. Some upstate legislators argue four counties with 50 percent of the population cannot represent all Michigan.

Coleman pushes fair 1952 Michigan reapportionment plan

State Senator Creigh ton Coleman of Marshall advocates a fair reapportionment plan to enlarge the Senate by two and grow the House by about ten percent on federal lines. He argues geography and diverse Michigan interests require balanced representation across urban and rural areas.

What is the best and proper way to reapportion now

The speaker argues against penalizing rural areas by letting large urban centers dictate state representation. He contends past underrepresentation of Detroit should not guide current or future reapportionment. He asserts two wrongs do not make a right and urges finding a fair solution.
