Gerald Coe a long time Saline resident born 1914 on a Chelsea area farm is profiled. After schooling in Saline Grass Lake and Milan he ran Fitzgerald's Barber Shop now at 101 N. Ann Arbor Street He produced the Saline In Action film in 1950 and has served on the Community Fair Board Rotary Club and City Council becoming Mayor Pro-Tem and streets commissioner He lives at 205 E Michigan Ave with wife and two children.

State Commander At District Legion Meeting

At the Second District Legion meeting in Saline Michigan on January 15 Eugene Houck State Commander and the State Membership Chairman spoke on the Veteran's Trust Fund and Legion membership benefits. Supper was served by Auxiliary members and veterans urged to pay 1953 membership dues in.

Busy Workers 4-H Club Plans February Pre Judging and Kiwanis Sale

The Busy Workers 4-H Club met January 15 at Mrs Reva Robison s home with five absences due to illness. President Judy Reid led the meeting and calendars were distributed by Mrs Jeopison. A February 14 pre judging school was discussed and items were planned for Kiwanis sale. Ruth Lutz reported parliamentary procedure and refreshments were provided by Barbara Goodin and Molly Gordon. Next meeting set for January 22.

Seniors Save Day For Edison with Huge Cake

The Saline Woman's Club hosted a meeting at Mrs. Reuben Finkbeiner's home voting five dollars to Polio Fund. Edison Co celebrated 50th anniversary as Saline seniors fashioned a 16 inch cake, improvised a large pan, and the senior class baked two hundred cupcakes for charity benefiting the March of Dimes.

Students See New President Take Office

Saline High School students witnessed President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon inaugurated via television. About two hundred students attended the auditorium viewing as two 21 inch TV sets were installed by Deede Radio and Electric Co. The piece notes broad AV advances in schools and mentions local visitors Mr and Mrs Marvin Brock.

Community club events and bake sales schedule

In January and February local groups announce fundraisers and gatherings. St Pauls Women's Guild hosts a bake sale for Polio Fund and Red Cross on Saturday at Woods Hardware, while a dance at the American Legion Home is planned. JCC Auxiliary and Wioman's Club also meet or sell cakes, and a Father and Son Banquet is set for February at the Methodist church.

Rural Schools Watch Inauguration On TV

The Union school on M-11 invited Bridgewater students to view the Washington D C inauguration from a lineside seat at eleven thirty aided by a Deede Radio Shop loaned aerial and TV set. The Michigan delegation had not yet passed the reviewing stand by four.

Fosdick Extension Holds January Meeting

The Fosdick Extension Group met at Mrs. Orrin Girbach’s home for January. Members made cancer pads and discussed fundraising ideas. Mrs. Dorothy Emerson and Mrs. Helen Lucas served a light lunch.

Local Polio Fund Grows in Saline. Rotary Leads

Saline appeals for March of Dimes donations with a $470 total raised from schools citizens and organizations. Rotary Club led with a $100 gift. JCQ Auxiliary bake sale raised $40 and student gifts amount to $137. Community dime cards bring in $35.50. Upcoming events include a January 24 bake sale by St Pauls Church Women’s Guild and a January 29 Mothers' March 7 00 to 8 00 pm. Junior Chamber of Commerce plans to cover Saline rural areas to reach a $1200 goal.

Family Night Dinner Series Begins at Federated Church

Circle 1 of the Ladies Aid Society leads the first Family Night dinner at the Federated church at 6 30 this evening. Families bring their own table service and food to share with coffee provided. The six part series continues next Thursday with Circle II in charge. After the meal the pastor reviews a chapter from Dr Fred L Brownlee's These Rights We Hold and an informal program with music and fellowship follows for all ages.

Students Enroll in Michigan State General Agriculture Short Course

Local youths from Saline join 75 students in the first eight week term of Michigan State College's General Agriculture Short Course. The two year program offers 16 weeks of instruction yearly with over 32 hours per week in livestock, crops, dairy, soil, farm management and related subjects.

Organizing New 4 H Club Near Lancaster Students Invite Nearby Schools

Lancaster area students form a 4 H Club and invite neighboring rural schools to join. The next meeting is Thursday January 29 at 7 30 p m at 8844 Willow Road. Boys and girls 10 years and older are invited.

Large Crowd Hears Dr Revellis at Concert

A Winter Concert at the high school drew over 600 attendees as Dr William D Revelli director of the University of Michigan Bands conducted the student ensemble. He praised the band and administration and discussed the film Here Comes The Band shown during the program.

Plans For World Day Of Prayer Service

A planning committee for the World Day of Prayer met at Mrs Alvin Siems home. The service is set for February 20 at 2 00 PM in Federated Church with nursery care provided. Wives of pastors and women’s group presidents compose the committee. Further program details will follow.

Mrs Wesley Taylor Guest Sneaker At Room Mothers Meet

The Room Mothers met on Monday evening January 12 with art teacher Mrs Wesley Taylor as guest speaker. She illustrated artistry development in children from kindergarten to fifth grade and explained how young children color as they see. Committee reports and routine business followed. They planned inviting the Student Council to meet the second Monday in February and arranged March of Dimes card distribution by the group.

Postmaster Exam Set for Bridgewater

The United States Civil Service Commission announced an open postmaster examination for Bridgewater to fill the postmastership after the January 29 deadline. The current postmistress is Jean Welch, serving temporarily.
