Curious Checks Carved on Linen and Wood in Philadelphia Bank

A Philadelphia bank clerk kept a peculiar set of checks formed from a linen collar cuff and a piece of lath. One wooden check, drawn by a sawmill owner stranded at his plant thirty miles from any house, amounted to two hundred fifty dollars and was paid after some debate.
