No Thousand Dollar Mayor For City With New Charter
Rumors persist that a city charter change would grant the mayor a thousand dollar yearly stipend. Clarence V. Smazel of the Michigan Municipal League said village formed cities typically pay mayors and council members little or nothing, averaging five dollars per meeting totalling about sixty dollars annually. He noted salaries are decided by the charter commission and that residents could reject an excessive charter, prompting a new draft. Until then village government continues under the current charter.
