New Dutch Land Created By Zuider Zee Reclamation

The Zuider Zee became a lake after a 20 mile dike cut it off from the North Sea and 550 000 acres were reclaimed for housing and farmland. Dutch engineers and the state pursued large scale drainage with wind pumps and later steam power, culminating in a multistage plan led by Dr C Lely to connect North Holland with Friesland, enclose four polders, and complete the big dam. The Northwest polder was drained by 1980 and other polders were slated for 1950 completion while the dam and pumping stations advanced.
