University of Michigan Buys Pinckney Farm for Observatory
The University of Michigan has purchased the 200 acre Pinckney area farm of John Roberts near Base Lake for $30,000 to serve as a site for a new astronomical observatory. Planned telescope building with a 75 inch aperture and keeper residence would cost about $850,000 subject to legislative action. The site offers elevation away from city lights and smoke, improving study conditions over the Ann Arbor observatory. A later note jokes about reindeer meat shipments to the United States and Santa Claus.
