Saving Money on the Farm Lumber Bill
The nation’s annual two billion dollar lumber bill for farm buildings could drop tens of millions if buyers switch from long lengths to short lengths. Short pieces of 7 feet and below are often equal in quality and cheaper by 15 to 35 percent, according to the National Committee on Wood Utilization chaired by Secretary Hoover. The report analyzes nine building types and shows permissible short-length usage across framing, boards, and trim, with significant potential savings and waste explanations.
