Inwood Hill park’s ancient tulip tree, once over 80 feet tall with a 51 inch trunk, has died back to a four foot stump after decades of decay and failed preservation. Park workers finally felled it for safety. The tree stood near an Indian village site and figured in local legends linking Manhattan to early inhabitants.
