Remarkable stand at Buena Vista boosts Taylor to White House
Fragmentary reminiscence recounts Mexican forces under Santa Anna pushing on Gen Zachary Taylor. A brief counter by Captains Sherman Bragg and volunteers delays the advance, prompting Taylor to rally and the Mexican troops to retreat. The tale links the episode to a 1848 Whig campaign slogan and Taylor's presidential rise.
