Michigan farmers warn on defrauded Shorthorn bulls

Field men from Michigan Agricultural College report cattle breeders selling plainbred Shorthorns as stock company bulls at up to nine times their value. Palmer Brothers of Belding are named among dealers. investigation by M A C extension staff and county agent Alexander MacVittie shows buyers pay $900 per bull with little regard to pedigree. The cooperative plan, started by the college in 1906, is misused for private gain, while genuine bulls can be bought for $350 to $400.

Republican State Convention Set for Lansing on September 23

The Republican state convention will meet in Lansing on Thursday September 23 at 11 am to nominate state officers and conduct business. Washtenaw County will send 27 delegates, chosen at a September 7 county convention, with August 31 primaries determining individual ballots. Delegates from each ward township and precinct are allocated by vote totals from 1918. The county convention on September 7 will elect state convention delegates, while district caucuses in Saginaw select party officers and committee members.

Government Insurance for Former Soldiers Expanded

The Washtenaw County Community Board cooperates with the Bureau of War Risk Insurance and the American Legion to inform veterans that they may reinstate lapsed government insurance. Reinstatement requires filing and paying two months' premiums, with one month covering the grace period and another current month. Term insurance may be converted to ordinary life or twenty year endowment, with cash value after the first year’s premium. Applications available through American Legion officers, the Washtenaw County Community Board in Ann Arbor, or the Bureau of War Risk Insurance in Washington DC. A Kalama zoo paper-maker grows roses around his factory as a sign of wealth, and a motto notes that those who live the most do not live the fastest.

Farmers Day Set for August at Michigan Agric College

The Michigan Agricultural College plans a big Farmers Day early in August with national experts on soils and crops. Brother Leo of Notre Dame will speak on farm management and soil improvement. The event includes test plots over 160 acres, 80 oil tests, fertilizer guidance by soils men, and entertainment arrangements for hundreds of visitors.

Fertilizer Ordered by County Farm Bureau

Washtenaw county has placed several hundred tons of fertilizer through the state organization purchasing department. Expert traffic men track shipments to prevent delays as the goods roll toward the state for farm bureau members.
