Oxygen raises yields by ventilating muck soils
Researchers led by N K Ellis of Purdue and Richard Morris of the U S Soil Conservation Service show deeper soil aeration dramatically boosts crops on muck soils. Yields for carrots onions red beets corn potatoes and others rose 3 to 33 tons per acre as aeration depth increased from 4 to 18 inches and then to 36 inches. Adequate plant food and sufficient rainfall supported the gains.
