Clean fields deter corn borer spread, Michigan study finds
Michigan State College researchers led by C B Dibble show clean tilled fields reduce corn borer survival. Discing before sowing raises infestation risk by sheltering borers in surface cornstalks and refuse. In clean fields, borers surface and perish or are eaten by predators, while two surviving borers can start a 100-strong population.
