Eye Irritation in Sheep Warns of Blindness Risks at Michigan State

Michigan State College reports lambs with weeping eyes risk blindness if not treated. Unturned eyelids cause constant eyelash irritation, producing watery discharge and cloudy film that may form a white spot and red ulcer, potentially bursting the eye. Treatment includes eyelid adjustment, eye washes with boric acid or argyrol, and kept in a shaded gardened area to reduce light. A spring inspection found 25 percent of a Michigan flock blind in one eye and one sheep blind in both.

During 1931 sales and profits fell with industry downturns, but employment stayed high, and over half a billion dollars was spent on construction and expansion, providing thousands of jobs at good wages.
