Bean feeding boosts milk output in Michigan dairies
Michigan dairy farmers test feeding cows cooked cull beans as a low cost protein source. Extension dairyman A. C. Baltzer notes over 12 000 tons of beans could be consumed before pasture season, with cows producing up to 10 000 pounds of milk annually when supplemented by alfalfa hay and silage. German farmers near Frankenmuth and Vassar cook beans in large kettles for dairy herds.
