A wartime urging to curb petty comforts and support soldiers in France. It condemns selfish Americans who beg for bread and withhold Red Cross or Liberty Bond funds, contrasting front line hardship with domestic appetite and urging full financial sacrifice for victory.
A fire at the Western Cooperage Sanpete finishing shed in St Johns last Friday night nearly destroyed the shed and much of the plant’s machinery. Officials estimate losses between 25000 and 30000 dollars, with an overheated motor blamed. Eight fire companies plus a fireboat fought the blaze, preventing spread to nearby buildings as smoke hampered crews. The warehouse survived and insurance covers the loss.
Public appeal asks Linnton and Peninsula residents to bring waste to the local fire station for collection on July 24. Call Miss A Darowish district manager at Columbia 358 before the deadline for pickup of metal, paper, clothing, tires, magazines, rags, glass, and other recyclable items.

He describes arriving from France after avoiding a submarine sighting, meeting George Lotson in France, and plans to ashore on the Fourth of July. He notes Florida residence, guard duty until noon, and hopes to write again before leaving.
A circular from the War Department requests 175 volunteers skilled in paring and sawmill work from Oregon to fill quotas. It specifies 70 chokermen 60 head buckers one dogger six foremen and 25 planer trimmers. Volunteers of draft age from Classes 2 4 and 4 will be sent to Vancouver Washington for engagement in producing spruce for airplanes. Those inducted will work in producing spruce for airplanes in the Northwest woods, a key war effort opportunity.
The Ladies Aid of the Swedish Lutheran church met last Wednesday at 908 North Smith Avenue hosted by Mrs George Skwar. About 35 attendees traveled from Portland and the gathering was highly enjoyed.
Henry Irving Dodge urges national suppression of The Yellow Dog as a menace to war support. He calls for Boy Scouts of America and youth groups to form a nationwide branch of the Boy Detective of America to root out perceived antiwar “Yellow Dogs.” He outlines organizing boys into detectives, issuing membership cards, and distributing denunciatory cards to identify opponents.
