City Council in Session Seeks Water and Light Reforms

The 43rd session of St. Johns city council met January 21 1908. Petitions for arc lights at Willis and Tioga, Monteith and Buchanan, Bradford and Mohawk were sent to the water and light committee. Liquor license petitions were referred to licenses. Depot street renamed to Fessenden was sent to be reported next meeting. Fire chief reported Rose City hotel failed fire code, and Central school needs ladders. matter to fire commissioners. Adding machines debated. council rejected 185 price in favor of 300 yearly export cost. Davidor franchise bond dispute led to extended 60 days to raise 5000. several officials opposed. Oswego street improvement deferred for deeper study. Arc lights ordered at New station, Chicago and Modoc, Meyers and Fessenden. Polk street extension via Caples tract recommended. bid inquiries to be published. Goodrich claim questioned. evidence of filing and non-sincerity cited. further inquiry planned. Installation of Wright W. R. C. officers at Compson event

Compson W. R. C. installed officers Carrie Courter as installing joer rs with Geo Hall president and officers including Mrs Cross as vice president Mrs Hinman chaplain and others. Open installation drew many comrades and friends. Wright W. R. C. provided color bearers and assisted in installation. President escorted past president Mrs Hinman to the chair and presented roses. Capt Snow presented a token to the installing officer. After remarks and thanks refreshments were served, time ended around 10 oclock.

Architect Mills Wins Kellogg Street Residence Contract

Wayne L. Mills, an architect and builder, has been awarded an eighteen hundred dollar residence contract on Kellogg Street between St Johns Avenue and Catlin Street. Mills, recently arrived in St Johns, has opened an office to run an up to date architectural and contracting business. He formerly worked with Holabird & Roche in Chicago, supervising construction on major projects including the Auditorium hotel expansion, the county building, and Mandel Brothers structures. Local building activity is expected to rise as low labor and material costs persist, with several brick and concrete offices under consideration. Guests Mr. and Mrs. Leitzinger of Tipton, Iowa, in the city seeking a new home, favor St Johns over Everett, Washington.

New Gas Works Planned for St Johns

Goodrich and Goodrich prepare plans for a new St Johns Gas Light Company plant 32 by 70 feet featuring steel or brick construction with fireproof steel trusses and a corrugated iron roof. The facility includes gas generator room superheater scrubbers drifiers engines exhausters and one 20000 cubic foot gas holder plus a 4000 cubic foot relief holder and 25000 gallon capacity. About five miles of gas mains will be laid at an estimated cost of 16000 with operations to begin promptly to meet rising demand for modern illumination.
