Back at last at James John High School basketball games

The James John High School news notes a joyous return after vacation with a 42 10 win over Portland Trade School, and a 15 12 loss for the James John midgets against Albina. A gym accident left one girl with a lump and another with a black eye. Debates against Gresham and Tillamook noted a navy resolution, with Hazel Hall and Maggie Dickie winning affirmative. The St Helens trip on the steamer America saw girls win 9 2 while boys lost 30 17, with Johnny Mc Gregor sick and Archie Smock refereeing.

St Johns Attends Factories Promotion Congress at Corvallis

Represented St Johns at the Factories Promotion Congress held in Corvallis. Attorney D. Lewis led the delegation to explore closer ties between factory and farm, promoting industrial development near raw materials. Departments discussed included timber, dairy, fruit, grain, wool, clay, stone, iron, broom, animal industry, transport and more.

Strange Justice in Oregon Arrest Over Missing Tools

In St Johns a man was nabbed in a vacant East St Johns store room with carpenter tools and a blackjack and skeleton keys. He claimed no ownership and planned to sell them. The district attorney dismissed the case citing insufficient evidence, prompting local officers’ ire.

Free Bible Lecture at Bickner Hall Sunday Noon

A free Bible lecture will be given at Bickner Hall Sunday noon by Norman M. Lawton, Bible scholar and lecturer, under the International Bible Students Association. The talk, Why God Permit Evil, will be illustrated by a large chart and followed by discussion. Lectures are free with no collection, and similar talks are planned nationwide.

Library Robbers Shoot at W. J. Haskins in Oregon

W. J. Haskins was wounded in a home encounter with robbers after a chair strike and gunfire. The robbers fled as the house caught fire, the victim stabilized at Good Samaritan hospital, with police investigations ongoing and his family away in Colorado.

Joint Installation Of St Johns Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen

The St Johns Royal Neighbors of America and Modern Woodmen of America met at University Park on January 8 for a joint officers installation. Jas JH Gee acted as installing officer for Modern Woodmen while State Deputy Mrs Rose McGrath led the women with Mrs Haley as Marshal. Guests enjoyed a door prize and a dining room surprise as more than 170 members and guests joined. Toasts by Mrs McGrath and Past Consul George Muhmn closed the evening as attendees returned home late.

Postponed Mothers' meets due to illness in city

The Mothers' meets were not held on Monday January 6 at the city hall because illness prevented the event. The program will be rescheduled for the first Monday in February with the same topics expanded for longer study. Dr EB B Gambee, a physician now located in the Holbrook building, is mentioned as a pleasant gentleman connected to the paper scene. John, a physician and surgeon, is moving his family to St Johns and plans to stay.

Peninsula National Bank Elects Officers and Adopts Federal Reserve Plan

Stockholders met January 18 and elected P Autzen FL C Knapp ML Holbrook Autzen and J ON Edlefsen as Directors for 1914. They ratified the action to join the Federal Reserve Bank system and subscribe to its stock. Directors met after the stockholders meeting naming P Autzen President Knapp Vice President Kollefsen Cashier and A Dobie latent cashier.

Roses For Women Passengers On Shasta Limited

On New Year’s Day forty bunches of roses, the last of the season, were placed on the Shasta Limited at Eugene to be presented to women passengers and to decorate dining cars. More than 12 000 roses have been provided in this way during the last seven months.
