A nostalgic poem recalls a boy’s view of his father’s hard work and his mother’s early-morning chores. The speaker imagines growing up to be like his parents and taking on the household duties, then sharing how he would tell them how to work when grown.
A company representative stated at a council meeting that Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. aims to erect the second largest mill on the coast on its North End tract. If started within a year or more, the project could employ a large local workforce and alter regional lumber markets.
Public spirited citizen Hon K C Couch spent nearly one hundred dollars to macadamize the street in front of his store and asks the city council to lay foot cement sidewalks and grade Philadelphia Street from Ivanhoe to Hayes in preparation for spring hard surfacing.
Last Thursday night a sparse turnout proved attendance poor though interest rose around a petition for a 20 percent teacher salary increase. The first trace of snow of the season appeared on the western hills Saturday morning before breakfast. Sol quickly melted it away in a few minutes.
The Star Sand Company bought the Marine Iron Works property at St Johns for 49000 dollars. The deal covers 360 feet of riverfront and 470 feet depth to the O R and N railroad, with the iron works to be dismantled and a peninsula headquarters to be established. The sale was arranged by H H Ardab of the Lumbermen's Building Telegram.
Holiday week receipts at the stock yards were light with 767 cattle 96 calves 1753 hogs and a small run of sheep and lambs. Mr and Mrs A A Mack hosted a New Years watch party at their Burr and Stafford streets home. The palatial residence was decorated with carnations holly and Oregon grape. Music cards and a delicious lunch followed the merriment as guests exchanged season’s greetings and departed. Attendees included Madames Drinker P H Edlefsen C Muck Derrie John Eilefsen Rice Evans Jackson Mclean and Misses Blanch Edlefsen Emma Muck and several Messrs including P H Edlefsen Edlefsen McLean Drinker Keon Derrie Evans Rice and C Muck.
