In Johns last Monday election a total 625 ballots were cast with about 150 eligible voters skipped. The mayor and recorder races produced the surprise results while councilmen contests remained close. Eason led with a 60 vote margin amid a spirited, orderly polling day and a wary, but jovial, post election scene.
The council met Tuesday, approved the last meeting minutes with a minor correction, and laid over charter commission work for two weeks. An arc light at Ivanhoe and John streets was ordered after a petition by 24 property owners. Bills totaling 66.50 were allowed. The city attorney was directed to prepare a written opinion on the city hall, with the building committee to push completion, and the engineer to inspect East Burlington street sidewalk grade for the next meeting.
Joe Villa a blacksmith operating a shop on Ivanhoe Street died by cutting his throat in a box car in Portland last Sunday afternoon. Found by police after a stream of blood showed in the car, Villa stated he had cut his throat. He died before aid arrived. A prolonged spree preceded the act. he had purchased the Ivanhoe Street shop on credit amid financial troubles. He leaves a wife in Brownsville Oregon and a Portland-based brother-in-law. Coroner Finley took charge. an inquest was deemed unnecessary.
The Wagoner Co formerly St Johns Grocery Co reported its largest sales day yet last Monday with six clerks serving an ever increasing trade surpassing last year by a wide margin.
